PE foam has a long service life when installed and used correctly. In indoor and protected constructions the service life is usually measured in years, not months.

Isolon 300/500 (IXPE/XPE) and Warmlex (non-crosslinked PE) are durable closed-cell foams. They are not biodegradable, do not rot and do not support corrosion. Their long-term behaviour depends mainly on installation and environmental conditions.

What affects service life

Typical factors include:

  • UV exposure (sunlight, open outdoor use);
  • temperature extremes over long periods;
  • mechanical stress or permanent compression;
  • chemical exposure or contamination.

Note: In most building applications the foam is installed inside the construction (under flooring, behind cladding or inside joints), which significantly increases durability.

Typical service life in EU applications

For standard indoor or protected uses:

  • no biological degradation;
  • no corrosion or rotting;
  • long service life under normal loads and temperatures.

Important: Open outdoor exposure or direct sunlight without protection may reduce service life (UV ageing). Mechanical protection and correct installation remain the key.

Design recommendations

— install the foam inside constructions or with protection;
— avoid continuous mechanical stress or point loads;
— avoid long-term direct UV exposure;
— use foil or covering layers where needed.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does the foam break down over time? No, it does not rot or corrode. Ageing is mainly related to UV and extreme conditions.
  • Can it be used outdoors? Yes, but protection against UV and mechanical stress is recommended.
