Short answer: Store self-adhesive Isolontape in dry, cool premises protected from sunlight, moisture and heat. Adhesives are more sensitive than foam itself: typical shelf life is 6–12 months, depending on the adhesive system and storage conditions.

This article explains how to store self-adhesive IXPE/EPE foam tapes, including temperature limits, protection from UV and moisture, and how these factors affect adhesion. The information is relevant for EU distributors and installers who handle tapes for sealing, HVAC, vibration damping and construction tasks.

Why adhesive-backed products require special storage

The foam base (IXPE/EPE) is tolerant to freezing and long-term storage, but the adhesive layer is more sensitive to:

  • temperature fluctuations — adhesives lose tack at high temperatures;
  • humidity — affects bonding strength;
  • UV exposure — accelerates ageing;
  • surface contamination — dust, oils and moisture reduce adhesion.

For this reason, self-adhesive products are stored under stricter conditions than standard foam materials.

Important: Heat is the main factor reducing adhesive performance. Avoid temperatures above +30–35 °C, especially during summer or in closed vehicles.

Recommended storage conditions

For Isolontape and other PE-foam tapes with acrylic or rubber adhesives:

  • Temperature: typically +5 °C to +25 °C for long-term storage;
  • Humidity: normal warehouse humidity; avoid condensation;
  • Location: store in closed, dry premises, protected from direct sunlight;
  • Avoid heating: do not place near radiators, heaters or hot pipelines;
  • No outdoor storage: even in wrapped pallets;
  • FIFO recommended: rotate stock based on production date.

Short-term transport at wider temperature ranges is acceptable if the rolls are not exposed to high heat or pressure and are conditioned at room temperature before installation.

Shelf life of adhesive systems

The limiting factor for self-adhesive materials is the adhesive itself, not the foam base.

  • Acrylic adhesive tapes: typical shelf life 9–12 months;
  • Rubber-based adhesives: 6–9 months depending on formulation;
  • High-bond or special adhesives: follow manufacturer notes.

After this period adhesion may decrease, but the material may remain usable depending on conditions and criticality of the application.

Note: Before installation, always test tape adhesion on a small area to confirm optimal bonding.

Preparation before installation

— let the tape acclimatise for 12–24 hours at room temperature;
— clean and degrease mounting surfaces;
— ensure surfaces are dry and free from condensation;
— apply with uniform pressure;
— avoid installation under direct sunlight or onto overheated surfaces.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can adhesive tapes be stored in an unheated warehouse? Yes, if protected from moisture. Allow acclimatisation before installation.
  • Is short exposure to high heat acceptable? Short-term only. Long-term heat above +35 °C reduces adhesion.
