Short answer: After a roll is opened or foam is cut, re-wrap the remaining material in protective film, store it vertically on pallets and keep the labels or batch data. This helps preserve properties and simplifies reuse in future projects.

This article explains how EU buyers and installers can store partially used rolls and cut pieces of Isolon and Warmlex so that the material remains clean, traceable and suitable for later use.

What to do after opening a roll

When a roll of Isolon 300/500 or Warmlex is partially used on site or in production, we recommend the following procedure:

  • Do not discard labels: keep the original label or note product name, thickness, density and batch number.
  • Re-wrap the roll: cover the cut surface and side area with stretch film or similar packaging film.
  • Store vertically: place the remaining roll back on a pallet in a vertical position to avoid deformation.
  • Protect from dirt and dust: do not store open rolls directly on the floor or near cutting fluids, oils or paints.
  • Avoid tight bending: do not fold the remaining material with sharp creases.

Note: Proper re-wrapping and vertical storage prevent permanent deformation of the foam and keep the surface clean enough for subsequent installation or lamination.

How to store off-cuts and smaller pieces

For smaller leftovers and cut pieces, simple warehouse discipline significantly extends their useful life:

  • Group by type and thickness: store off-cuts of the same grade together to avoid confusion.
  • Use boxes or bins: place smaller pieces into labelled containers instead of leaving them loose.
  • Avoid heavy loads: do not compress foam leftovers under heavy objects or pallets.
  • Keep away from solvents and adhesives: prevent contact with aggressive chemicals that may attack the foam.

For self-adhesive off-cuts (Isolontape), it is especially important to protect the adhesive layer from dust and UV; only clean, properly stored pieces should be used for sealing or bonding.

Traceability and reuse

— keep at least one label from each original roll with indication of product grade and batch;
— when reusing leftovers for critical applications, check that the material corresponds to the required density and thickness;
— if in doubt, use off-cuts for less critical tasks (packing, protection, auxiliary cushioning) rather than key insulation layers;
— follow the same general storage rules as for full pallets: dry, closed premises and protection from heat and sunlight.

Frequently asked questions

  • How long can partially used rolls be stored? Under proper conditions, similar to unopened material. However, cleanliness and mechanical deformation become more critical.
  • Can we mix leftovers from different batches? For non-critical applications – yes. For controlled projects it is better to keep materials separated by batch and grade.
