Short answer: Freshly produced or tightly packed Isolon and Warmlex foams can have a light “technical” odour which usually dissipates after unpacking and ventilation. LIRIDA-M supplies technical foams for B2B use; any specific VOC or indoor air quality requirements must be checked at project level.
This article answers a frequent practical question from EU customers: what does the foam smell like, how long does the odour last and what should be considered when using Isolon and Warmlex indoors.
Isolon 300/500 (IXPE) and Warmlex (non-crosslinked EPE) are polyethylenebased closed-cell foams. Like most technical polymers, immediately after production or long storage in sealed packaging they may have a noticeable but usually mild “technical” odour.
For many building and technical applications this initial odour is not critical, as the material is covered by finishing layers (laminates, coatings, floor coverings, etc.).
Note: LIRIDA-M supplies foam materials for technical and industrial use. We do not position our stock as certified “low-VOC” or “zero-emission” consumer products unless such characteristics are explicitly agreed in the contract and supported by documentation.
If you plan to use foam indoors where odour is important (for example, in living areas, yoga studios or children’s rooms), we recommend simple measures:
For most technical applications the material is not used as a visible final layer, so the odour is further reduced by coverings and normal air exchange in the building.
LIRIDA-M can:
— provide technical data sheets and safety data sheets for selected grades;
— give general recommendations on storage, handling and ventilation;
— discuss available information on composition at the level of raw materials and additives.
However, we cannot:
— issue generic guarantees for all possible indoor air quality schemes in different EU countries;
— replace local testing or certification procedures for specific labels (for example, eco-labels or low-VOC schemes);
— evaluate individual sensitivity of end users to odours or materials.
Important: If your project has strict requirements on VOC emissions, odour or indoor air quality, please inform us at an early stage so that we can discuss appropriate documentation, testing options or alternative material grades.
— clarify whether foam will be exposed directly to indoor air or covered by finishes;
— inform LIRIDA-M if specific eco-labels or VOC classes are required;
— request TDS/SDS for the selected material grade;
— plan unpacking and ventilation before installation;
— follow national guidelines for indoor air quality and ventilation after construction or renovation.
